In the video above, Google staff member Matt Cutts explains how search engines work and gives an overview of how Google determines which pages are the best to display for any given search query. In the video, Matt Cutts refers to “200 questions” which is one way of thinking about the SEO ranking factors that search engines use to categorize your website and figure out which page is the best to show for a keyword.
These SEO ranking factors are broadly broken up into these two categories:
A remodeling company based on the west coast of the US had a dated-looking site but it was ranking quite well and driving leads. After a website redesign to give a new professional aesthetic to the online presence of the business, a new website was launched at the beginning of May 2018.
This client specializes in kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects. We chose keywords relating to their primary services and focused them in their main suburb and the surrounding areas where they wanted a more prominent presence.
Here are the organic results tracked from May 2018 to May 2019, with an increase of over 1,000 positions (tracking 40 relevant keywords).
In the above graphs you can see the total ranking change (line graph) and then the number of keywords in each positions. The dark green represents rankings from positions 1-3, the lighter green represents positions 4-10, and so on. From the beginning their website had mostly rankings from 11 or worse (11 is on the second page of search results, which is the best place to hide a body, because nobody ever looks there!).
As the keyword list grew and we got higher and higher rankings, more of them slipped into the dark green (positions 1-3) area. This is really what we were looking for. In the last four months or so, lots of their keywords moved up in rankings as well, from the lower positions 31-50 to 11-20, and then finally from 11-20 to 4-10. While not nearly as valuable as the keywords in position 1-3 from a visibility and traffic standpoint, we’re happy to get more real estate on page 1, the top 10 organic results on a search result page.
Below you can see the local results (maps pack and Google My Business listing) tracked from May 2018 to May 2019, with an increase of over 280 positions (tracking 40 relevant keywords).
The client is very pleased with these results, needless to say! They’ve been keeping busy with a steady flow of leads generated from their website, which they’ve successfully combined with other marketing channels, such as in-person seminars and local event sponsorships.
